Attention all seniors! Are you tired of spending a fortune on groceries every month? In this article, we’ll explore exclusive senior discounts offered at various grocery stores across the United States, then follow up with tips for saving on your grocery bill. The following list is the result of an exhaustive search of grocery stores that offer their senior shoppers (of which I qualify) exclusive discounts and promotions. So you know, the number of stores offering senior discounts is quite limited. You may want to consider finding other simple ways to save on your groceries.
A Few Things to Keep in Mind About These Grocery Store Discounts for Seniors
✔ This list is current as of this writing. Stores can change their policies at any time.
✔ These offers are valid for in-store shopping, and you’ll likely have to show your ID. (Yes, I’m flattered when this still happens).
✔ Some supermarkets will ask you to register for a free store branded card in order to receive the senior discount.
✔ There may be exclusions (like liquor, gift cards, or pharmacy products) attached to some of these offers. Many of the links I’ve provided below for each store provide additional details.
✔ Some offers vary by location and may not be available at each store within a chain. For example, some say that Albertson’s offers a senior discount, though I haven’t been able to confirm this. It’s possible these are offered on a regional basis – so ask if you’re not sure.

Asking for Senior Discounts
Even if your favorite store isn’t on this list, it doesn’t hurt to ask if they carry a senior discount. Supermarkets don’t always publish their offers online. Plus some stores within a chain may be independently-owned, so policies will differ by location.
Save on Groceries Without Senior Discounts
You still may be able to get good prices on food items without a senior discount. Here are a few tips to consider.
Big Box Stores
One of my favorite places to stock up on food essentials is at Target. Many of the products I buy (not all) are priced below what I’d normally pay at a supermarket.
Save on Natural and Organic Groceries
Good food doesn’t have to cost a fortune if you know how to apply some basic tips. If you’re a Whole Foods shopper or would like to shop there but think it’s too expensive, there are some simple things you can try to reduce the cost, like taking advantage of their generic products and being discerning about which departments you shop.
Shop Online
Online grocers are growing in popularity, and increased competition is usually a good thing for us shoppers. One of my favorite online vendors is Vitacost -owned by Kroger- where I can buy things like spices and oatmeal along with my supplements and hand creams, at a reduced rate.
Food Coops and Senior Discounts
A food cooperative is essentially an independent grocery store “owned” by its paying members. Anyone can apply for membership. And while anyone can shop at a food coop regardless of membership status, prices are usually lower if you’re a member. If your local food coop offers a senior discount, the membership fee can help offset that cost.
Saving ten or fifteen percent on groceries may not seem like a big deal. When applied consistently, however, these discounts can make a difference to seniors on a fixed income.
