Who says aging can’t have its perks? More than 100 million Americans are 50 years and older (that’s nearly one-third of the country’s population!), and as our demographic continues to grow, so does our buying power. With retirement and fixed incomes, saving money becomes a top priority. In this age of rising costs, it’s important to know where you can save a few extra dollars. That’s where senior discounts come in.
There are a range of businesses that offer discounts to senior citizens. From restaurants to retail stores, hotels to grocery stores, and everything in between, there’s a wealth of discounts available exclusively for seniors. Are you ready to join the throngs of smart and savvy seniors saving money every day? In this article, we’ll dive into senior discounts, covering everything you need to know to start taking advantage of these incredible deals. So let’s get started and discover the world of discounts that awaits you!
Discounts for Seniors: A Few Things to Keep in Mind
- These senior discounts are current as of the date of this publication. Stores can change their policies and rescind offers at any time.
- This is a work in progress. I will be adding (and deleting expired) discounts as they become available.
- Some senior discounts may have exclusions; for example you may be unable to stack coupons and other discounts.
- Depending on the company, offers can vary by store and location.
- Be prepared to verify your age; or to show proof of AARP membership where required.
- Some businesses will ask you to register for a store branded card to receive the senior discount. Branded cards are usually free to sign up for.

Senior Savings: Other Ways Seniors Can Spend Less
Just Ask for a Discount
Just because a business doesn’t advertise senior discounts doesn’t necessarily mean it doesn’t offer them. If this is the case, it doesn’t hurt to ask.
Shop Online
One of my favorite online vendors is Vitacost, which is owned by Kroger. They don’t just offer vitamins, supplements, and toiletry items. You can also find some grocery items like ground coffee, snack items, peanut butter, and cereal, often at competitive prices. Vitacost is also big on offering special promotions and coupons; and there’s no membership fees required.
Register for a Store Loyalty Program
Loyalty programs are one of the easiest ways to score discounts on future purchases, coupons, and even free items. And they’re usually free to join.
Examples of loyalty programs include Kohl’s Rewards and Target Circle. One of my favorite rewards programs is MyPanera, where you can earn discounts on food and beverages (and even free items) after you make a random number of purchases.
Check Your Credit Card for Special Offers
Your credit company can be a good source of discounts and special offers. For example, Delta AMEX has administered Spend $50 get $10 back and Get 3% back type of offers for use at specific retailers.
Earn Cash Back on Your Purchases
Why not earn money back on your regular purchases? With the Ibotta app, you can earn cash back on purchases at stores like Target, QVC, Macys.com, and Chewy.
Earn Free Gift Cards
You can earn points when you shop, play online games, and take surveys with sites like MyPoints. You can then trade the points in for gift cards to places like Panera, Target, and Barnes & Noble.
By taking advantage of these savings, we seniors can stretch our budgets and continue to enjoy the things we love. It’s important to research and ask about available discounts, as they may vary by location and company. So go ahead, treat yourself and remember that age is just a number – especially when it comes to saving money. Keep living life to the fullest, and don’t forget to check for those senior discounts!
