When I first had the idea for this article, I thought I’d have to make room for dozens of companies. That wasn’t the case, and unfortunately this list is much shorter than I would have liked. On the plus side, many retailers now offer other ways for anyone to save money (I cover this at the end of the article) regardless of age.
If you’re a senior who’d like to save even more money, I have similar lists of grocery store discounts and travel discounts.
A Few Things to Keep in Mind About Exclusive Senior Store Discounts
✔ This list is current as of this writing. Stores can change their policies and offers at any time.
✔ These senior discounts are usually valid for in-store shopping, and you’ll likely have to verify your age.
✔ Some businesses will ask you to register for a store branded card (usually free) in order to receive the senior discount.
✔ Some of these offers carry exclusions, while others may let you stack coupons and other discounts. Many of the links I’ve provided below for each store provide additional details.
✔ Some offers vary by location and may not be available at each store within a chain.

Does Amazon Offer a Senior Discount?
While Amazon doesn’t have a specific senior discount, it does offer about half off Prime membership for recipients of certain government programs that some seniors may qualify for – like Supplemental Security Income (SSI), not to be confused with Social Security; and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
To qualify for a discounted Amazon Prime membership using this method, you’ll need to register via Amazon and upload a photo of your SNAP EBT card. You’ll also need to enter the payment method you’ll use to pay for your membership once your free 30-day trial has ended.
Currently, the regular price of Amazon Prime is $14.99 per month. If you qualify with your SNAP EBT card, you’d pay $6.99 per month. And you’ll receive the same benefits of an Amazon Prime membership. Some of these include:
- A 10% discount off the purchase of sale items (those with a yellow tag) at Whole Foods Market.
- Access to Prime Reading. This lets you borrow books from their catalog which you can read them on your Kindle e-reader, Fire tablet, or one of the Kindle reading apps.
- Free shipping. Includes two-day shipping, as well as same-day shipping for qualifying zip codes. Some restrictions may apply.
Other Ways For Seniors to Save
There are other ways to save even if your favorite stores don’t offer senior discounts.
Register for a Store Loyalty Program
It’s an easy way to earn special rewards, like points for future purchases, exclusive coupons, and free shipping. The best part is that loyalty programs are usually free.
Examples of loyalty programs include, Bloomingdale’s Loyallist card, Kohl’s Rewards, and Nordstrom’s Nordy Club.
Check Your Credit Card for Special Offers
It’s worth checking your credit card company for cash back specials with partnering retailers. Delta AMEX, for example, regularly has Spend $50 get $10 back and Get 3% back type of offers when you use their credit card at specified retailers.
Always Check for Coupons Before Purchasing
When I’m waiting in line to check out, I make a habit of taking out my phone and checking the store’s website for any available promos. If there aren’t any listed, I’ll usually ask the cashier if they have any coupons (just in case). When shopping online, I always check for specials and coupons either on the store’s site or social media pages. Other good places to check for retailer coupons are RetailMeNot and Swagbucks.
Earn Cash Back on Purchases
With the Ibotta app, you can earn cash back on purchases at stores like Target, QVC, Macys.com, JCPenney, Plow & Hearth, and Chewy. You can even link your store loyalty cards to Ibotta so you don’t have to miss out on any discounts that the store offers.
A 10 to 20% discount may not seem like a lot. Then again, why leave that money on the table when it’s just as easy not to?
